Meeting of December 10, 2009

Chair Yamamoto called the meeting of the Fine Arts Commission to order at 7:01 p.m. in Room 12 of the Cultural Center.  

I.  ROLL CALL
PRESENT:  Regina Barall; Terrye Blackstone; Karen Howe; Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien;
                     Glynis McKenzie;  Judy Okeson;  Betty Russell; Dan Russell; Maureen Rodgers; Sue Tukey; Florence Schroeter; Prescille Yamamoto.
                     
ABSENT:    John Ryan (excused).
                     
II.   MINUTES           
MOTION  By Maureen Rodgers
                Seconded by Karen Howe
                To approve the minutes of November 12, 2009.
                Approved.  (One abstention – Florence Schroeter)
        
III.    CHAIR’S REPORT
Chair Yamamoto thanked the Commission members for their support over the past four years and wishes the new chair, Karen Howe, well.

Chair Yamamoto reported the Day in the Life account is #S3806 and has a balance of $3613.13.  These funds will be used for the mural project at Goodwin College once approved.

Chair Yamamoto reported that the New Britain Museum of Modern Art membership is expired.

IV.     CORRESPONDENCE
Information was received from the following:
  • Paul Bisaccia will be performing New Year’s Eve in Rocky Hill
  • Information from Finance Director Mike Walsh on the budget process and when the budget is due.
The clerk will contact Mike Walsh to inform him of the January meeting which will have the proposed budget on the agenda.

V.      COMMITTEE REPORTS
        Holiday Fest
        Betty Russell reported that Buffa performed at the Holiday Fest and was well attended.  Betty further   stated there were a few new events that everyone enjoyed including a
        Cookie Walk.  Sue Tukey stated the Bell Ringers performance was wonderful.

        Karen Howe reported that the EHSYF did a Karaoke/Pizza Party for children and families.  Many participated and the event was successful.
        
        Drama/Lecture/Poetry                                    No report at this time. 
        
        Music                                                   
        Glynis McKenzie reported The CitySingers will be performing at St. John’s Church on Saturday, December 12 in the evening.  Gynis advertised in the East Hartford Gazette for this
        program.   EHSYF students will be assisting the CitySingers with set-up and break-down after the program.  A special thank you to those EHSYF people who have volunteered
        their time.

        Florence Schroeter reported Paul Bisaccia will be performing on May 16, 2010.

        Photography
        John Ryan is continuing to work on the exhibit tentatively scheduled at Goodwin College.

        
        Film Series                                                     
        Glynis McKenzie reported that the four films have been decided as follows:
  • The Rumba (Belgium film)
  • Katyn (Polish film)
  • The TVs Coming (Tunisian film)
  • Uniform (Chinese Film)
They will be shown at 6:30 p.m. at the EHCCC.  The first film will be shown on January 2, 2010.

Art                                                             
        Dan Russell reported he attended an exhibit on prints in Stonington sponsored by the Printmaker Society.

        Terrye Blackstone reported the Art League has begun preliminary work on the website.
        
        Children’s Programs                                             No report at this time.

        Dance                                                           
        A dance festival is scheduled for April 2010.

        Regina Barall reported she is working with 55 high school students, 16 middle school and Silver Lane    students.       

        EHSYF                                                           
        Karen Howe reported that the EHSYF had their December holiday gathering and will be doing “Kiss Me Kate” pending approval.

        The EHSYF Cabaret/Auction will be held on May 1, 2010 at the Veteran’s Memorial Clubhouse.

        Karen further reported that the EHSYF staff is working with EHHS staff to produce “Bye, Bye, Birdie” which will be performed the last weekend in March 2010.  

        PHOTOGRAPHS/PAINTINGS PROJECTS FOR GOODWIN COLLEGE
        Terrye Blackstone will meet with Mark Schienberg to discuss a mural project at Goodwin College.  Maureen Rodgers, Betty Russell and Karen Howe have volunteered to work
        with her on this committee.

        MINI GRANTS FOR EAST HARTFORD PUBLIC SCHOOLS    No report at this time.
        
VI.    OLD BUSINESS                                            None.

VII.    NEW BUSINESS

        Betty Russell casts one vote for the following slate of officers:

X.      Approval of Bills                       
        Theresa Godreau (clerk fee for November 2009)                   $  80.00

                To approve payment of the bills as submitted.

XI.     MEMBER’S CONCERNS
        Maureen Rodgers thanked Prescille Yamamoto for her dedication and all her hard work being the Chairperson for the past 4 years.  Members thanked her for her fairness to all
        Commissioners allowing them to speak and for her professionalism.

        Prescille Yamamoto reminded Commissioners of Charlie Graham’s retirement party on Friday at     Maneeley’s.  Charlie was a music teacher in the school district for many years.
        
XII.    ADJOURNMENT
